some pictures!

Here's my sister's scarf thus far. I've knitted 25 inches. I was thinking maybe stopping at about 5 ft. What do you all think? I haven't decided yet and tend to just eyeball it. When I make scarves, I decide how long to make it based on how it hangs on me after I've wrapped it around once. I don't think this one needs to wrap around as much because it's so thin.
This would be a picture of my traveling vines cloth blocked. I did a lot of stretching to it and it looks so nice now! :) It's upside down in the pic but you get the idea. :)
I have spent the last hour and a half reading blogs, skimming through group posts, when I found this. And I'm referring to that Valentine dishcloth pattern! I am so making that and soon. I've been sitting here trying to stop myself from starting it right now because I'd like to finish my sister's scarf. We'll see how I do. I'm sure by the end of the weekend, you'll all be seeing a pic of my version of that cloth. lol. Hopefully you'll also be seeing either an almost complete pair of convertible mittens (I'm serious!) or an almost completed scarf! I thought about my mittens last night/this morning and I need to get a move on with them. It won't be cold for that much longer and I'll have to wait until next winter to use them! I can wear socks anytime but not mittens!

my first knitpicks purchase!

Ugh. I did a stupid thing! I had a blog all typed up and then I wanted to check to see if my links all worked (which they did) and I closed the window without even thinking so I have to retype this post! :( Anyway, I made my first knitpicks purchase today. I saw this and immediately thought, "omg, I have to make this! It is totally something I would wear. I also decided to purchase some lace-weight yarn! I got some shimmer in the turquoise splendor for this traveling vines scarf I saw online. I thought about getting a yarn that was more fall-based in terms of colors but I'm more of a blue girl. I considered the pink though but thought it'd be smarter to go with the blue hue. I can't wait to get my yarn! :) The last thing I need to be doing is starting anything new but that goes for all of us, doesn't it? And we're such enablers of each other!!! lol. I have been working on my sister's scarf every chance I get. I'm still trying to get through the first skein. I find once I'm through with the first skein, the rest comes easy. I don't know how many skeins I'll need for this scarf. I decided that it shouldn't be too long because it's so thin. I get to keep the leftovers and I'm hoping to use the leftovers to go with the sws I picked up over the holidays to try my hand at one of these. Seeing how cool AR's turned out made me wanna make one for myself! :) I went to go observe at the school I will start working at two days a week starting next week. There are only two classes in this school. It's super grass-roots. Both of the teachers are wonderful. I will be working with a handful of Kindergarteners and two of the first graders. I have to tell you that the three years that I spent teaching first grade was in a teaching situation identical (pretty much!) to the one these two teachers are in. What I mean is, they're in one big room which is divided in two via two partitions. One side is first grade and the other side is Kindergarten. The difference btwn my teaching situation and theirs is I didn't ever have to teach from the same wall. What I mean is, since they only have the two partitions (which are back to back) they both only have that same space to teach from. That makes it hard because you're constantly hearing one another. If they had other wall space the problem could be solved very easily but they really don't so they make do. As I sat there observing, I started to wonder if I was a sell-out. I taught in a similar (if not worse!) situation as theirs but here I am looking for something else. I don't want to say better because anything could've been better than the last place I was at! I spent three years teaching in the inner city and I miss it. I miss the students. I don't miss the administration I had to deal with or the organization that runs my old school at all but the kids I miss. In the school I was at, I pretty much only had myself to rely on. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I had that experience and it actually has helped me to become a stronger teacher but I want something different. I want to be at a school where money isn't a hardship for the students, the students show up ready to learn, they've had a good breakfast before arriving at school, and their parents are able to participate in their education in some way or other. I want to have supplies provided for me rather than me always having to provide my own and having to remind my students how poor our school is. I want to see the flipside. I want to be spoiled a bit. I think after those three hard years (with 3 different locations, 3 different principals, you get my drift--I hope!), I want to be spoiled a little. Is that wrong?? I got a taste of what a school like that is like via the school that I subbed at a couple of times last year in the Palisades and I have to say that I'm a bit jaded from my inner city experience! Is it the money that makes kids who have more a bit brattier than the ones who don't? I heard that some of them will try to bargain with you even! Am I ready for that??? I don't know. Guess we'll see. I need to get my applications in to some of the public school districts as well. Oh yeah, it's pouring (well it was!) in LA! I had been home maybe about 20 min (even had time to go run down to the laundromat get a load in) and WHAM, pouring rain! The weather forecasters predicted rain in the afternoon-not in the morning! Oh well. We need it.

how does your garden grow?

I planted some seeds the other day. I can't remember if it was Sunday/Tuesday but either way, look what's sprouted! They actually started popping up a couple of days ago. They're supposed to be morning glories. :) I hope they make it!I need to go get some more plants. There's one in nearly every room excluding the bathroom and my sister's room.

lace talk and what I've been working on

After completing two heart lace cloths by smariek, I've decided that I need to work on some lace projects. I want to get good at knitting lace. Yesterday, I spent part of the evening looking up lace projects and I saved a few that I'm going to try out soon. Put that first sweater on hold, give me some lace! Smariek has a lot of lace cloths and the one that called out to me was the travelling vines one so I set out to work on it late last night and I finished it in the wee hours of the morning. You'd all be proud! I worked on it while watching "Accepted." So there are some movies I can knit to after all. Back to the lace, I am determined to knit a third heart lace cloth too--one that is nicer than the first two! Why all of a sudden have I become a perfectionist with lace??? I just want my lacework to look right. Is that wrong???
I haven't touched my widdershin or my convertible mitt. I don't think I'll start my second mitt until after I've casted on for my second widdershin. I'm using the same size needles for both projects. I have two sets of the dpns but one set is super bendy so I've been mixing my needles for both projects-makes things easier.
You're not going to believe this. I finally found a pattern for my sister's scarf. It's a bit weird because the ends are knit separately but so far so good. The pattern is an easy one to remember and it actually is the scarf I had wanted to make for my sister in the first place. I mean when I was trying to design my own pattern using the BW books! This pattern was a smart way to do it. I hadn't even thought of doing right twists as opposed to the cables I had picked out to go on the sides of the braided cable. The pattern can be found here. Here's a pic of what I've done so far. Oh no. I was going to address some comments that had been posted but now I don't know who made them! Someone was asking for the pattern for the convertible mitts. I actually have the pattern posted on the sidebar if you look under what's on my needles. Liz asked about if I twist my stitches and you know, as a somewhat combined knitter, I do and had never thought there'd come a time when it would bite me on the you know what. Hence the reason for wanting to knit lace. I worked on that travelling vines cloth as a true left-handed combined continental knitter and look how it came out. :)I think I did a good job. So I am retraining my brain and my hands to knit fully as a continental knitter. It's a learning process.
I just noticed that since I haven't upgraded my template, my posts can't be found according to their label. Why am I even bothering then??

so I switched...

and you know what?? I don't get what all those blog posts were about that I had read that were talking about the conspiracy behind blogger going beta, then blogger statedthey were no longer in beta, the templates aren't in html anymore, etc. My blog still looks the same. Of course, I haven't tried to play around with anything so it's been an easy transition! :) I'll do some toying around tomorrow maybe and see what this blogger beta stuff is all about. Glad to see all my groups back on my dashboard though. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!

here's what I did over the weekend

I hadn't made any stitch markers since before the end of last year (sounds so long ago, doesn't it?) so here's some new ones I worked on Saturday afternoon. I picked up some more beads that night but haven't made any more stitch markers-yet!

I was wondering if there was mail delivery today because there wasn't any mail in our mailbox so I went to the usps site to see if there'd be any information...and to check out the new stamps that are coming out when I stumbled upon this. :) 2007 Holiday Knits In 2007, the U.S. Postal Service will warm up for the holidays by issuing Holiday Knits, four stamps featuring classic winter-time imagery designed and machine knitted by nationally known illustrator Nancy Stahl. These beautiful stamps consist of a dignified stag, a snow-dappled evergreen tree, a perky snowman sporting a top hat, and a whimsical teddy bear. In recent years, knitting has become quite popular again, both in the United States and internationally. Inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters and knitted Christmas stockings, Stahl decided on "something cozy" for this year's holiday stamp issuance. She used a computer software program to draw her original designs and convert them to stitches and rows. Then she downloaded the information to an electronic knitting machine and used it to knit her creations. The machine's smaller stitch gauge didn't provide quite the effect Stahl was hoping to achieve. So she transferred the designs onto punch cards and used a different knitting machine that works something like an old Jacquard loom and has a larger stitch gauge. Stahl scanned the finished pieces into her computer and retouched the photographic images to ensure that all the stitches aligned properly. The result is a set of four colorful and "cozy" stamps that will add an extra touch of warmth to seasonal correspondence. (taken from usps.com)

my second finished object of 2007!

Okay, since I was so unhappy with my first heart lace cloth, I casted on for a second one yesterday and completed it this morning. I am so much happier with this one. I think the paton's grace yarn, (which by the way, I picked up for 50 cents!) was a better yarn for me. Okay, off to work on that widdershin!

And I'm not too impressed with it. I've only done two lace projects (including this one--the first being the cloth I made for AR. This tells me I need to work on it some more. I need to learn the right tension. I had been eyeballing some of the lace patterns in the knitpicks catalog but I just haven't taken the time out to order anything out of any of the catalogs they send me! My first payday (in a long time!!) will be coming soon so maybe I can use some of my money to get some yarn for a lace project. We'll see. I have met all of my clients that I'll be working with and they're not so bad. That princess that I was complaining about last time, she's been taken care of. She just might become one of my favorites! The high-profile client that I have is quite high-profile. Let's put it this way, apparently Tom Cruise even recommended a tutor for my lil high-profile gal!!! Sigh...all I can do is my best, right? Also next month, I will start going to an elementary school two times a week two hours @ a time to work with small groups of Kindergarteners. :) It's going to be fun!! In other job news, remember how I was excited about finding out that the school I sub at has a 1st grade opening in the fall? They finally called me about it. Actually, they first called to ask if I'd be interested in their Spanish teacher position! (FYI: I've never taken a Spanish class in my life!!!!!). I can sort of speak it but not well @ all. I can get my point across. I suppose if I practiced more I'd be better than I am now...needless to say, I had to turn down that offer and I let them know that I wouldn't be qualified for that position anyway. Then they mentioned the 1st grade position. :D And since they know me (that is exactly what they said!), I don't even have to go through the preliminary interview process! I get to skip right on over to doing a model lesson. I'm going to do one sometime next month. I picked Language Arts. I haven't a clue what exactly I'm going to do. This would totally be a dream come true! Now, you might be wondering..what about this job I have now. I honestly would like to keep it. This job is the first one in a very long time where I totally and completely believe in what they're doing. I love my boss, I love my coworkers, I love where I work, etc, etc, etc. I talked to my boss about all this earlier this afternoon when I went in and she said as long as I @ least stayed on part-time and worked in the summer, she had no problems with it. She said, "You do need to make a living." I'm not holding my breath though...I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop somewhere and @ some point. I did that with my fiance too! I have yet to fix my broken 7 needle. I don't need it right now anyway. My sister is going to order me a new pair of 7s. I can't remember what I picked out. She's also going to get some pink yarn to go with that leafy green yarn I had been working with. She wanted a happy scarf not a dreary one. I don't know if she's ordered any of it yet cos she hasn't said anything. In the meantime, I'm going to attempt to finish my widdershin so I can get started on the second one. I actually could've started it a while back but I want to relish in my finished one first and then start the second one. Then once I get that underway, I'll finish my mittens. I don't know why I can't multi-task so well anymore!! I guess I just want to appreciate the little things. lol.

say goodbye to these two things..

I frogged my sister's scarf. Do you see why?? Somehow I lost oh, about 5 stitches along the way and it started to shift on the left hand side. I have frogged this sucker @ least 3 times and to no avail so I decided that was it for me. I needed something that didn't require SO much of my attention. I let her know, and had her choose another pattern. She saw the pattern for uniscarfity that I had saved to my computer. So we had to go out and get some more yarn! We picked out some chestnut brown in the paton's and when we got home, we didn't like how red it was. In the store, it looked more like a chocolate hue. Now, we were in a hurry and rather than read the label, we just eyeball-matched colors with the yarn we already had @ home. I started working on the uniscarfity pattern, and I didn't like how it was turning out. I think I was doing something wrong. I decided to look through my BW Treasury of Knitting Patterns and found something similar to the honeycomb brioche stitch used in the uniscarfity but I dunno. I'm still not loving it. The other pic is of my poor size 7 needle. I was knitting the uniscarfity, when it just snapped. I tend to drop my needles when I'm knitting. I was sitting in the kitchen knitting by the fish tank and the needle dropped (no surprise) but when I looked down, it was in pieces. :( I can still use the plastic part (and I'm actually doing just that) but I'm so bummed. I'm going to try super glue and see what happens because it's going to be a while before I can get some new 7's. :(

streets of San Francisco

This story is long overdue! Basically, my mom took the week of Christmas off from work. Apparently, she took it off and was going to come back to LA with us (yet failed to mention this to us because the last time it was even brought up was Thanksgiving!!!!). We weren't prepared to go back to LA the day after Christmas and then have to drive back to Salinas to drop her off (and then make a third trip to LA). We don't own any oil wells and we don't manufacture our own gas! Since she had all that free time, she wanted to do two things (yes, just two!) go to San Francisco and go to Valley Fair-a fancy mall in Santa Clara. We drove into the city probably on the 28th of December. It was just my mom, my fiance, and I. My sister had already gone back to LA. My brother actually was gonna try to meet up with us (and bring that darling of a niece of mine!) in San Francisco but that didn't happen. They had tons of laundry to do so they got as far as San Jose. Anyway, we get to the city, and my mom doesn't really have an idea what exactly she wants to do! I had never been to the Japanese Tea Gardens in Golden Gate Park (and neither had she) so that was our first stop. Here's mom. :) She didn't particularly love the tea gardens-and neither did I. We were rather disappointed. Plus there were a lot of tourists there. There's my mom @ the top of this wheel we climbed up. She's kind of laughing @ me. I think as we were going up the thing I asked her, "How are we supposed to get down from here??" My fiance tried to take a pic of us actually posing but there were too many annoying tourists! :P It's okay. The day was about experiences, not photo ops. Here's my fiance's contribution for some artistic content: That was taken in the botanical gardens. We only did the two gardens and then we were off and running. Next stop was...a park that my mom had been to when she first became a citizen that was near the Golden Gate Bridge she said. That was where she really wanted to go. So here are some Golden Gate Bridge shots to share. :) This one was taken when we got there. This one was taken after we had climbed all these steps and were much closer to the bridge. The walk was both cool and envigorating. I had never been up those steps before and they reminded me of these other steps that lead up to Julius Castle. After we made it back down, my mom and I went into the gift shop which is where we saw those knitting kits. Here's the other pic I took! The kits were maybe $19.99 and I couldn't believe it!! Anyway, our next and final stop was Lombard Street because my mom had never been there. Let me tell you, the wait was long and I kept envisioning our car rolling back into the cars behind us because we were on a somewhat steep hill where the cars were stop and go. I took pics while we drove through it but I didn't get any that truly captured Lombard Street. :( I tried to take a shot after we had exited it to get the whole street but I couldn't get a good shot. Oh well. The houses were interesting. I don't know how the people who live there put up with all the traffic though. And there you have it. I did get some knitting done. I knitted allthe way up. :) I worked on my widdershin.

saturday knitting

Here's what I worked on yesterday! I was able to finish one half of the convertible mitten pair. They're a bit snug around the fingers but that was my fault for not reading the pattern accurately! Oh well, good thing they come in pairs. :) I also worked on my Widdershin! Thank you Liz for suggesting that I check out the video on knittinghelp.com. It really helped! I watched the video Friday but didn't do the actual knitting until yesterday and I think it came out okay. I really love my sock. I didn't even have this much love for the first sock I ever made. I think making toe-up socks is amazing. I love that I can try it on whenever I want. I also love that I can decide how big I want the cuff to be. I do have to say that I agree with whoever it was that asked, "Why do handknit socks make your ankles look so fat?? :P I may attempt to complete my widdershin today but we'll see. I ought to also do some work on my sister's scarf! I'm so glad tomorrow is a holiday for me! :)

it's finally happened

You know how blogger says that when they're ready for you to make the switch you'll see it in your dashboard?? Well, all this time I had been waiting to see if I'd ever see that they think I'm ready to switch and guess what I saw just now??? Apparently, 3 now 4 of the team blogs that I'm in have switched over now. It's turning into a mass exodus! Earlier today only 3 of my blogs had gone over to the new blogger! The others haven't switched yet. I wonder what made blogger decide that now was the time for me to switch? I don't think blogger is ready for me to switch yet. I won't be able to take my template with me. I've seen some of the newer ones and none of them are me. Plus, I'm not ready to learn new coding! It was nice to see that I'm 'cool' now. lol. I thought about clicking on the button just to see if it would tell me that they're not ready for me after all! I'll be back with a real blog..and some knitting. I worked a bit on my convertible mitten. I'm actually working on the flap now! I've been reading up on short row heels too. I'm at the heel mark with my widdershin and I don't want to have to do the wrapping stuff. Any suggestions? I tried it and wasn't sure if I did it correctly. Nona tried the wrapping technique, the japanese one and the yarn over one. I kinda like the japanese one but I have to figure out how to do that as opposed to the version provided for me in the widdershins pattern. :P Ugh..I really really want to knit on my sister's scarf but haven't been able to. I've gotta finish something soon. Thank goodness for MLK day. :) I'll have a full week next week. So, I'll return with pics of what's on my needles as well as the sf story that I've been owing you all. Oh, in case you're wondering, my first week of work went well. One girl is obnoxious. She's a lil princess. She even walked in with a mini-louis vuitton bag!!!!!! I have two new clients next week and then my schedule will be somewhat set. There's talk of me taking over these morning clients but I like having my mornings free! Plus, last night was the first night where I didn't spend the entire time lesson planning. It only took me maybe an hour to lesson plan for my twins and their sister. I already lesson planned for my princess and I won't see her til Wednesday. My new ones start on Wednesday-back to back. I wonder how my coworkers lesson plan when they stay til closing. :P

So, I realized the other night or the other day (whichever!) that I have yet to even talk about my little day trip to San Francisco with my mom and my fiance! I can't go into full and complete details right now but I can provide a teaser photo and try to post tomorrow if not the next day. :)Here's another. knittingmama actually mentioned these things on her blog one day a while back. My mom and I found these at the gift shop near the Golden Gate Bridge. Okay, I better get going. I still have dinner to make and lesson planning to do. Btw, my first day went okay. It could've been better but it was in no way as awful and horrible as I had been envisioning. Now I just need to fine-tune.

cleaning house so to speak

Thanks for all the wonderful comments about my niece and for congratulating me on my 100th post. :) This weekend officially marks the time when I finally take all the holiday decorations and cards down. I always wait until the Epiphany to do it--I guess cos I noticed while growing up that's when my mom took everything down. Now, I think she takes everything down sooner just because she has less time to do stuff now. I've got some good news on the job front. I think I've posted that I'll be starting soon with my first clients next week. I thought I was just going to have three to start but apparently I have four starting next week, and the week after that I have 2 others starting. There's a possible seventh one in the wings. What sucks is my ability to substitute at the school in the Palisades might be taken away because I'll be working right afterschool with my new clients. I guess we'll see. The other good news is that placement agency I signed up with, they emailed me about a position opening up at the school I've been subbing at!!!!!!!!!!! It's for first grade!!!!!!!!! I haven't heard anything from the school directly but the placement agency did send my portfolio out to the school. I think it is for next school year and you know what, that's totally fine by me because that's what I want, a full-time position for the upcoming school year. And I plan to keep my part-time position with the Kelter Center too. In knitting news, I haven't made too much progress on the scarf or the sock. In fact, I ended up frogging both a few times because I wasn't giving either one my complete divided attention when I was working on them--serves me right, I guess! I was watching "How To Eat Fried Worms" while working on my sock the other night. Has anyone else seen that movie? I couldn't stop laughing. I loved that it has the girl from "Curly Sue" too and if you're a "Weeds" watcher, the kid who plays Shane is in this movie as well and he is freakin' hilarious!

100!!!!!!!

I had wanted to get to 100 before 2007 hit but oh well. Here I am, 2 days into the new year and I'm at my 100th post! Here's to many more. :) Well, my fiance and I did some babysitting early on during our stay at my parents' house and I saw it as my chance to get some pics of my niece wearing some of the stuff I had knitted for her! :)Here she is wearing the mitts I made her. They came off a few minutes later. She's notorious for getting both hats and mitts off her hands. Next time, I need to make some that are attached by an i-cord. Here she is wearing one of the hats I had made for her. Obviously she's outgrown it but I just wanted to see by how much. I doubt that she's big enough for her penguin hat. I didn't have a chance to get a pic of her trying it on. :( Here's her sweater with buttons that my fiance picked out. :) She better wear it soon before she outgrows it!! She's starting to not fit in some of the clothes they got her! She's a lil eating machine. :) I affectionately refer to her as bulldog. lol. I told AR that I would try to capture a picture of my niece showing off her bulldogness and here's what I got. :) Here's a great one my sister took. I got the antlers free from Old Navy. Here's some great ones I took on Christmas Day. :) Like Aunt... Like Niece.She's just recently discovered that she can put her fingers (or her whole hand in this case!) in her mouth. That bright light is the flash on my sister's cameraphone.Then look what happened once my sister took a pic! No pictures, please!!Okay, last one because you're probably sick of seeing my niece!! Here she is after my fiance woke her up on our way back from our walk around the neighborhood. She fell asleep before we even left the driveway and slept through the whole 2 hour walk! She's so precious. :)

vacation knitting

Happy New Year everyone! :) Just wanted to post really quickly some of the knitting I did while I was at my parents' house. :) My widdershins are slowly coming along. I really like how they're turning out. The knitting is going slow but who said it was going to be a marathon?? ;) As I mentioned in a post while I was still at my parents' house, my kr gift exchange partner gifted me with Vogue Stitchionary 2 [Cables!!!!!] and here's the scarf that I finally have started and actually like for my sister! To the trained knitters' eye, you can see some of the mistakes I've already made. It was too late to go back and correct..especially since I'm working with 60 some stitches and I can't even begin to tell you how many cables are in each row. It, too is coming along nicely. :) The knitting was slow starting off but I'm starting to get then hang of it. In this picture, it actually looks really cool. Last night, I got started on a pair of convertible mittens. No pictures to share because I've only done about 2 rows! Ummmm..when we got home yesterday, my yarn which I forgot to even talk about here before I left for the holidays was waiting for me. I was the December newsletter winner at the yarn grove and I won a skein of lorna's laces bullfrogs and butterflies! It was hard to choose what color but I settled with cedar. I think I thought it was going to be a bit brighter but it's okay. I have no idea what I'm going to make with it! I'll be back with a few more posts chock-ful of more pictures and a san francisco treat! ;)
